Cowles Library's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) is integral to realizing our professional values of intellectual freedom and supporting the university’s mission of preparing students for "meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible global citizenship." In alignment with this mission, we are intentional in our efforts to progress towards DEIJ. As the intellectual heart of the university, we will implement strategies that actively seek out and integrate diverse perspectives and experiences in all aspects of our work, ensuring that our environment supports innovation, curiosity, and critical thinking while contributing to the broader University's goals.
Systematic racism, oppression, and inequities exist within academia and are deeply embedded in our society and the information landscape. Information, while valuable, can be wielded by those in power to marginalize certain voices. Authorities within disciplines often privilege select perspectives that sustain established structures, leading to biased outputs and limiting diversity of thought. To address this, we will examine our own biases and privileges, actively work to dismantle barriers to access and opportunity, and challenge systems of oppression and injustice.
Guided by the ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the ALA's principle of intellectual freedom, Cowles Library is committed to fostering a learning environment that champions access to information as a fundamental human right. As the ALA asserts, "intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction." By upholding this principle and promoting information literacy, we support the freedom to explore ideas, engage in critical inquiry, and express oneself without censorship or restriction—essential elements in creating a diverse, inclusive, and socially aware academic community.
Cowles Library is dedicated to adaptability as our understanding of DEIJ evolves. We strive to create a library that is welcoming, inclusive, and empowering for all, and one that remains at the forefront of social progress and justice, as well as cultural competence within the library context. We understand that our work is ongoing, and that true progress requires a collective effort. We believe that together, we can build a more equitable and inclusive future, transforming lives and strengthening our community along the way.
As part of our commitment to DEIJ, we will maintain an action-oriented DEIJ Working Group or committee, with members focused on prioritizing the following goals for the entire library team.
