The Drake University Archives and Special Collections was established in 2013 and serves as the official repository for all Drake University-related materials.
Hours
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Appointments required. Please contact us to schedule an appointment in advance.
We occasionally close for holidays or special events. Please contact us to confirm hours when planning your visit.

Your Visit
Upon arrival, you will be asked to register (no ID required), as well as read and agree to the Reading Room Guidelines.
After you request materials (via a Call Slip), you will be given only 1 box at a time to research.
What to Bring With You
- Laptops, digital cameras, pencils, and cell phones (set to silent) may be used in the research area.
- Pens or markers of any kind, food, beverages, tripods, and personal scanners are prohibited.
Reading Room Guidelines
- After registering, please store coats, briefcases, parcels, backpacks, and personal books in the Research Room’s designated area.
- No ink of any kind may be used in the research area; use pencils only. Computers may be brought into the research area and used at the discretion of the Archives and Special Collections.
- Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited.
- All archival materials must be handled carefully. Only one folder at a time can be called. Keep folder contents in their existing order. Do not lean or press on archival materials. Do not trace maps or other records.
- No material may be removed from the research area.
- The Archives and Special Collections does not permit access to restricted materials.
- Researchers are advised that it is their responsibility to obtain copyright clearance to publish or otherwise reproduce or distribute archival material. If needed, please complete the Request to Publish Form[Link to file].
- A completed Reproduction Request Form [Link to file] is required for photocopies and/or digital scans. Some fees may apply.
Directions & Parking
The Drake University Archives and Special Collections unit is situated on the second floor of Cowles Library at 2725 University Ave. The main entrance to the library is on the north side of the building. If you require assistance finding us within the building, please don't hesitate to ask for help at the Information Desk on the main floor.
Parking
Des Moines city parking is allowed on University Avenue and surrounding neighborhood streets. Please take note of any time limits and city regulations that are posted. (view a larger map of campus)
Drake University requires a parking permit to park in Drake parking lots. Visitors can purchase a commuter lot pass and should park in one of the two Visitor Lots on campus. Permits should be printed and placed on the dashboard of your car.
Visitor lots are indicated by Gray signs and have parking meters in case you do not have a printed permit.
