Where to Publish

Deciding where to publish your research isn't always easy or straightforward. The tools and resources on this page are dedicated to helping you make informed decisions about where to submit your work. We also outline a number of Open Access and Open Educational Resource (OER) options on our Open Access & OER Publishing page.

Cabell's Journalytics

Journalytics provides complete contact and publication information, multiple quality metrics, submission experience data, and peer review indicators for over 13,000 journals across 18 academic disciplines. The journals database and journal insight tools help researchers search, filter, and compare journals when making decisions about publication and to assist administrators with evaluating publication records. Cabell's also offers User Guides to help you get the most out of Journalytics.

Journal Acceptance Rates

Journal acceptance rates yield important statistical information about the selectivity of a journal. While there is no single, comprehensive source for finding acceptance rates, here are some good places to look:

  • Cabell's Journalytics lists acceptance rates, when available, in the Submission section of journal listings.
  • A journal's website may list their acceptance rate with their editorial or submission guidelines.
  • Professional societies may track and publish acceptance rates for top journals in their discipline.
  • Article databases specific to your discipline may include articles written on the quality of certain journals and their acceptance rates. For example, check PsycINFO for psychology, CINAHL for the health sciences. Explore other Cowles Library databases.

Journal Prestige

Determining a journal's prestige typically involves two components: Impact Factor and Immediacy Index. In science disciplines, the Eigenfactor may also play a role.

Impact Factor is the ratio equal to the number of cites to recent articles divided by the total number of recent articles, where "recent" may refer the the past couple of years.

Immediacy Index is the ratio equal to the number of cites to current articles divided by the total number of current articles, where "current" may refer to the past year.

Eigenfactor rates the importance of scientific journals based on the number of incoming citations, with citations from higher-ranked journals being given greater weight.

Finding Prestige Statistics

Science Watch is a website that uses data from the Thomson Reuters Web of Science to periodically publish journal impact reports for disciplines.

Google Scholar Metrics include the h5-index and the h5-median rankings for each included publication. Visit Google's explanatory page to learn more about Google Scholar Metrics and its use of h5-index. To search for publication, click the search icon at the top of the Google Scholar Metrics page. You can also browse publication by discipline.

SciMago Journal Rank (SJR) is a portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus database. These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific (including business and social science) domains. Indicators shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus database from 1996. When you search Browzine for scholarly journals to which Cowles Library subscribes, the SJR will be displayed in results.

Altmetrics

Altmetrics, or alternative metrics, measure the online impact and engagement of research through social media mentions, blog posts, news articles, and other digital platforms. They provide researchers with a broader view of how their work is being discussed and utilized in the public sphere, complementing traditional citation metrics and offering insights into the real-time influence and reach of their research.

Some of the primary aggregators of altmetrics include:

Altmetric.com - Provides comprehensive tracking of research mentions across social media, news outlets, blogs, policy documents, and other online platforms.

PlumX Metrics (Plum Analytics) - Aggregates various types of research metrics, including usage, captures, mentions, social media interactions, and citations. Cowles Library does not subscribe to PlumX, but PlumX metrics are available in search results on Elsevier databases such as ScienceDirect.

ImpactStory - Focuses on showcasing the broader impact of research by tracking mentions across a variety of platforms and providing profiles for individual researchers.

Dimensions - Offers a wide range of metrics, including altmetrics, and integrates data from multiple sources to provide a holistic view of research impact.
