Who Was Madame Chiang Kai-shek?

  • Born Soong May-ling, she married Chiang Kai-shek, the eventual President of the Republic of China, in 1927
  • She came to the United States in 1907 at the age of nine to attend school
  • Soong May-ling spoke fluent English and was a devout Christian
  • As Chiang Kai-shek's wife and First Lady of the Republic of China she made several tours through the United States to gain support for the nationalist military effort 

Madame Chiang Kai-shek's Visit to Drake University

  • On April 6, 1959, Madame Chiang Kai-shek gave a speech entitled "Eroded Spirit and the Result of Fragmented Policy" as the first-ever speaker in the George Olmsted Lectureship 
  • The visit was a part of Madame Chiang Kai-shek's visit to college campus's around the United States
