Energy Citations Database (ECD)

"ECD includes scientific and technical research results in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes bibliographic citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents."

Handbook of Public Communication of Science and Technology

Handbook"Comprehensive yet accessible, this key Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the fast growing and increasingly important area of ‘public communication of science and technology’, from both research and practical perspectives. As well as introducing the main issues, arenas and professional perspectives involved, it presents the findings of earlier research and the conclusions previously drawn. Unlike most existing books on this topic, this unique volume couples an overview of the practical problems faced by practitioners with a thorough review of relevant literature and research.

The practical Handbook format ensures it is a student-friendly resource, but its breadth of scope and impressive contributors means that it is also ideal for practitioners and professionals working in the field. Combining the contributions of different disciplines (media and journalism studies, sociology and history of science), the perspectives of different geographical and cultural contexts, and by selecting key contributions from appropriate and well-respected authors, this original text provides an interdisciplinary as well as a global approach to public communication of science and technology."

Intute: Science, Engineering and Technology

Math Handbooks in Cowles Library

Here are some handbooks on math found in Cowles Library. Books are generally listed in the order the library has received the books with the most recent first.

Mathematical Association of America (MAA)

The Online home for the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. The site features membership information, employment opportunities, meetings and publications, with a corner for columns on mathematical games and interesting tidbits.

Mathematical Programming Glossary

"Published by INFORMS Computing Society, this glossary is available to users for free. Maintained by a series of widely published editors from renowned universities in the US, Canada, and Germany, it features terms related to mathematical programming, economics, computer science, and mathematics. Beyond the glossary, this Web site offers a list of dictionaries, information on citation styles, a brief introduction to mathematical programming, commonly used notations, myths and counter-examples, and biographies of famous mathematicians. Glossary terms are listed alphabetically. A search box is also available, but searching for a specific term can be challenging. For instance, searching "parameter" produces a list of places in the glossary that contain the term "parameter." To search for the definition, the system requires users to type the term within quotation marks.

Definitions of certain terms do not address all relevant disciplines that the glossary is designed for; e.g., "parameter" is not defined to include computer science. In computer programming a parameter is a variable, also known as a reference or value, which takes on the meaning of a corresponding argument passed in a call to a function, subroutine, or procedure. Despite the incomplete definitions of terms, information in this glossary is reliable, and terms are defined with clarity. Terms such as "labeling algorithm" have an additional note in PDF format. Certain terms are hyperlinked to outside Web pages; e.g., LINDO (a tool for creating optimization applications) is linked to LINDO Systems' corporate home page. The glossary is informative and should be included in the list of dictionaries, thesauri, and glossaries of economics, computer science, and mathematics that students and scholars use. The site is easy to navigate and loads information very quickly." from Choice, April 2009
