Joseph Berry Keenan Digital Collection
"[Visited Jun'09] Harvard University Law School's digitized collection makes available online over 1,400 documents and correspondences as well as nearly 100 photographs of Joseph B. Keenan, the chief counsel of the International Prosecution Section (IPS) at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), commonly known as the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. Those materials are in two discrete collections, "The Joseph Berry Keenan Papers" and "The Joseph Berry Keenan Visual Materials Collection." Web organizers arranged them in a user-friendly manner so that viewers can navigate through them as if opening boxes and folders at archives. Devices resembling microfilm readers, offering magnifying and rotating functions, are also helpful. Most of the documents are correspondences, arranged in alphabetical order by senders or receivers. Although the site does contain some IPS documents, such as official press releases, those wishing to read IMTFE-related materials may be disappointed at the paucity of such documents. Yet the contents of the correspondences, though not directly relevant to the IMTFE, should interest scholars and students of the IMTFE and post-WW II Japanese history. Some of them reveal how Keenan and other Allied personnel involved in the IMTFE or Japan's occupation felt about each other, as well as about Japanese war criminals and Japanese people in general. Such documents may help researchers of the IMTFE infer the mind-set of the trial participants. Also among the correspondences are the letters that Japanese nationals wrote to Keenan. They may provide valuable clues for construing the perceptions of Japanese nationals about WW II and the war crimes trials. Overall, the documents will be more useful for research on some of the fringe fields of the IMTFE, such as the thoughts and perceptions of trial participants and observers, than on the trial proceedings themselves." (from Choice September 2009)
