ACToR: Aggregated Computational Toxicology Resource
"ACToR, a free database from the National Center for Computational Toxicology of the Environmental Protection Agency, compiles quantitative and qualitative information on pesticides, industrial chemicals, water contaminants, and other potentially toxic compounds from a growing list of more than 200 Data Collections from state, federal, and international agencies, academic institutions, and commercial sources. The database is so comprehensive that a new user should visit the Basic Information and Help links found in the home page's left column. The home page displays a brief description and a search box for chemical name or CAS registry number. Results are rapidly displayed on the same page in a table showing structures, chemical names, CAS numbers, the presence of up to seven types of toxicity for each compound or substance returned, and the Generic Chemical Details link, where any information from the Data Collections on a specific substance or compound resides in a fixed set of clearly labeled links. Unfortunately, one must open each link to determine whether it contains any information; however, that is a minor nuisance in a database of this scope.
The easy-to-use Search by Structure link in the left column is designed to allow structure-function investigations of compounds with similar chemical structures. Browse Assays links to assays by phenotype and category as defined in the Help glossary, either with brief details and a citation to complete information or with a Link Out to an external Web site with the information. The Data Collections link alphabetically lists individual data collections, each with further links to content details." Choice, September 2009.
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
The mission of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), as an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to serve the public by using the best science, taking responsive public health actions, and providing trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances.
ATSDR is directed by congressional mandate to perform specific functions concerning the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. These functions include public health assessments of waste sites, health consultations concerning specific hazardous substances, health surveillance and registries, response to emergency releases of hazardous substances, applied research in support of public health assessments, information development and dissemination, and education and training concerning hazardous substances.

Leopold had numerous interests encompassing "forestry, wildlife management, conservation biology, sustainable agriculture, restoration ecology, private land management, environmental history, literature, education, esthetics, and ethics." He authored several environmental books, including A Sand County Almanac (1949), and created and maintained a huge repertoire of letters and other correspondence, diaries, memoranda, essays, research reports, committee meeting minutes, journals, and county, state, and foreign files. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Aldo Leopold Archives contains digitized resources from Leopold's main body of work from the end of the 19th century until his death in 1948." from Choice, Feb 2009.

Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC)
"The Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) is the primary climate-change data and information analysis center of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). CDIAC is located at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and includes the World Data Center for Atmospheric Trace Gases. CDIAC's data holdings include records of the concentrations of carbon dioxide and other radiatively active gases in the atmosphere; the role of the terrestrial biosphere and the oceans in the biogeochemical cycles of greenhouse gases; emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere; long-term climate trends; the effects of elevated carbon dioxide on vegetation; and the vulnerability of coastal areas to rising sea level."
Center for International Earth Science Information Network
"The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) is a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. CIESIN works at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences, and specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment."
CRS (Congressional Research Service) Reports
CRS Reports (Congressional Research Service) was established to provide members, committees and congressional staff with nonpartisan and objective research and analysis on all public policy issues. Research divisions include: American Law, Domestic Social Policy; Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade; Government and Finance; Knowledge Services; and Resources, Science and Industry. Many CRS reports are updated at varying intervals, so it is always important to note the exact date of issuance rather than just the title and year of publication.
Dictionary of Earth Sciences

Follow geologists in the field as they explore the primal forces of the Earth."
Ecological Internet
"The mission of the Ecological Internet (EI) has consistently been to "empower the global movement for environmental sustainability by providing retrieval tools, portal services, expert analysis," and opportunities for "eco-action." Created and managed by Glenn Barry, a conservation biologist and political ecologist, Ecological Internet Inc. is a nonprofit organization that uses the Internet to promote and support worldwide conservation issues, ecological sustainability, and restoration.
The Ecological Internet environmental portal includes a group of separate appropriately named sites, each focusing on a different issue. They include EcoEarth.Info http://www.ecoearth.info/ (CH, Dec'06, 44-2100), Climate Ark, Forest Protection Portal http://forests.org/ (CH, Oct'08, 46-0871), Water Conserve http://www.waterconserve.org/, Rainforest Portal http://www.rainforestportal.org/, and Ocean Conserve http://www.oceanconserve.org/. My.Ecoearth.Info http://my.ecoearth.info/ enables users to have an environmental Web page in order to network with people with similar interests, launch campaigns/petitions, or write about environmental issues. Finally, Ecological Internet hosts a new "biocentric e-zine," New Earth Rising http://www.newearthrising.org/. EI is updated daily and contains archived information from 2000 forward; the site also lists current projects and campaigns. The overall layout of EI is somewhat confusing, but that is mainly because each individual site is very comprehensive and packed with information. There is a heavy reliance on color to differentiate the individual sites (which could be difficult for chromatically challenged users), and not every new screen or portal has links back to the main page. Results from searches performed using the search box on the main page are displayed on the EcoEarth.Info page; users can restrict their searches to just this site, links, news, or the entire Internet. EI provides scholarly information and will be a valuable resource for environmental academic programs, as well as an appropriate resource for students who are interested in getting involved in environmental issues." from Choice, April 2009
