Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)

The mission of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), as an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to serve the public by using the best science, taking responsive public health actions, and providing trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances.

ATSDR is directed by congressional mandate to perform specific functions concerning the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. These functions include public health assessments of waste sites, health consultations concerning specific hazardous substances, health surveillance and registries, response to emergency releases of hazardous substances, applied research in support of public health assessments, information development and dissemination, and education and training concerning hazardous substances.

Laboratory Safety Institute

LSI's mission is "to make health and safety an integral and important part of science education, our work, and our lives." There site provides links to safety guidelines, checklists and other sources for lab safety. There are links to seminars, workshops, internships, sabbaticals, a listserv and an online newsletter.

NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards

The Pocket Guide gives safety information, exposure limits and MSDS like information for chemicals. It is searchable by chemical name, trade name or CAS registry number. Downloading the whole guide is possible from the web site.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

The US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.  Includes a section on Laboratories and what standards apply as well as a chemical database, a complete A-Z list and other  safety related information.

Comprehensive guide to the RTECS from NIOSH (CDC).

Toxic Substances Portal

The Department of Health and Human Services's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Web site gives an alphabetic list of substances and includes information about characteristics, exposure risks, associated health effects and related CDC and ATSDR health studies and assessments

Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program

"The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a publicly available EPA database that contains information on toxic chemical releases and waste management activities reported annually by certain industries as well as federal facilities."
