Aldo Leopold Archive

"The written works of one of the most forward-thinking conservationists of the 20th century, Aldo Leopold, are part of the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections. Leopold had numerous interests encompassing "forestry, wildlife management, conservation biology, sustainable agriculture, restoration ecology, private land management, environmental history, literature, education, esthetics, and ethics." He authored several environmental books, including A Sand County Almanac (1949), and created and maintained a huge repertoire of letters and other correspondence, diaries, memoranda, essays, research reports, committee meeting minutes, journals, and county, state, and foreign files. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Aldo Leopold Archives contains digitized resources from Leopold's main body of work from the end of the 19th century until his death in 1948." from Choice, Feb 2009.

Bibliography of Fossil Vertebrates

From the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology this covers the indexed published literature of vertebrate paleontology from 1509-1993. "The BFV Online provides interactive access to the SVP's 'Bibliography of Fossil Vertebrates' series. Using the BFV Online, users can specify a search criterion, and receive a formatted list of matching literature references. Results will appear in a new window (users that have activated pop-up blocking in their browser may need to adjust their settings for this to work properly). Queries are formed like taxon = 'Tyrannosaurus'. Detailed instructions are available for writing queries, including complex Boolean statements and the use of pattern-matching."

Bio Notebook

Maintained by the Pasteur Institute, this is a large and diverse database of biology resources and information.

Biodiversity Heritage Library

"Ten major natural history museum libraries, botanical libraries, and research institutions have joined to form the Biodiversity Heritage Library Project. The group is developing a strategy and operational plan to digitize the published literature of biodiversity held in their respective collections. This literature will be available through a global 'biodiversity commons.'"

Bioethics Resources on the Web

"The Internet is replete with resources available to those with an interest in bioethics including education, research involving human participants and animals, medical and health care ethics, and the implications of applied genetics and biotechnology. This website contains a broad collage of annotated web links, and while this list is comprehensive, it is not totally inclusive. The listed resources provide background information and various positions on issues in bioethics. Where possible, we have linked directly to those positions."

Biological Control: A Guide to Natural Enemies in North America

"This guide provides photographs and descriptions of biological control (or biocontrol) agents of insect, disease and weed pests in North America. It is also a tutorial on the concept and practice of biological control and integrated pest management (IPM)."

Ecological Internet

ecologo"The mission of the Ecological Internet (EI) has consistently been to "empower the global movement for environmental sustainability by providing retrieval tools, portal services, expert analysis," and opportunities for "eco-action." Created and managed by Glenn Barry, a conservation biologist and political ecologist, Ecological Internet Inc. is a nonprofit organization that uses the Internet to promote and support worldwide conservation issues, ecological sustainability, and restoration.

The Ecological Internet environmental portal includes a group of separate appropriately named sites, each focusing on a different issue. They include EcoEarth.Info http://www.ecoearth.info/ (CH, Dec'06, 44-2100), Climate Ark, Forest Protection Portal http://forests.org/ (CH, Oct'08, 46-0871), Water Conserve http://www.waterconserve.org/, Rainforest Portal http://www.rainforestportal.org/, and Ocean Conserve http://www.oceanconserve.org/. My.Ecoearth.Info http://my.ecoearth.info/ enables users to have an environmental Web page in order to network with people with similar interests, launch campaigns/petitions, or write about environmental issues. Finally, Ecological Internet hosts a new "biocentric e-zine," New Earth Rising http://www.newearthrising.org/. EI is updated daily and contains archived information from 2000 forward; the site also lists current projects and campaigns. The overall layout of EI is somewhat confusing, but that is mainly because each individual site is very comprehensive and packed with information. There is a heavy reliance on color to differentiate the individual sites (which could be difficult for chromatically challenged users), and not every new screen or portal has links back to the main page. Results from searches performed using the search box on the main page are displayed on the EcoEarth.Info page; users can restrict their searches to just this site, links, news, or the entire Internet. EI provides scholarly information and will be a valuable resource for environmental academic programs, as well as an appropriate resource for students who are interested in getting involved in environmental issues." from Choice, April 2009

Freshwater Ecoregions of the World (FEOW)

"Freshwater Ecoregions of the World, (FEOW) provides a new global biogeographic regionalization of the Earth's freshwater biodiversity.  Covering virtually all freshwater habitats on Earth, this first-ever ecoregion map, together with associated species data, is a useful tool for underpinning global and regional conservation planning efforts, particularly to identify outstanding and imperiled freshwater systems; for serving as a logical framework for large-scale conservation strategies; and for providing a global-scale knowledge base for increasing freshwater biogeographic literacy."

"Freshwater Ecoregions of the World is a joint venture between the World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy. In addition to some corporate funding, support comes from the US Agency for International Development through an award for the Parks in Peril Program. As the name implies, the site covers global freshwater issues that are important to all, with the intent to make people more aware of and sensitive to what is happening on this planet.

Users can select an ecoregion from the map, browse a list of ecoregions, or search for an ecoregion. For each region, the site provides detailed, factual information including geographic boundaries, species found in the area, habitats, and climate. The maps and information are very understandable, and the information is collected and displayed uniquely, with no ambiguity in presentation and the right mix of images and text. The bibliography is excellent, and the well-organized site appears to be updated frequently. The images and data seem to come up equally well on Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.12. The site is easy to navigate, but in at least one spot, this reviewer was unable to return to a previous page without using "back" on the tool bar. A login option is given, though it is not apparent why one would need a login. This resource is valuable for anyone (especially students or researchers) needing information on freshwater ecosystems and related issues or for keeping up with what is happening to freshwater habitats on Earth." from Choice, March 2009

GAP Analysis Program

"The goal of the GAP Analysis Program is to keep common species common by identifying those species and plant communities that are not adequately represented in existing conservation lands. Common species are those not currently threatened with extinction. By identifying their habitats, GAP Analysis gives land managers and policy makers the information they need to make better-informed decisions when identifying priority areas for conservation."
