Quick Poll

Do you know how to contact a librarian for assistance?:

Welcome to our new web site

We've been busy this summer. Instead of hitting the beach, we've been pounding the keyboard to bring you this shiny new website. We'd love for you to leave a comment telling us what you think and what you'd like to see in the future.

See what's new (hint: everything) and what you can expect to see in the upcoming months.

The usability testing some of you helped us with last semester proved that the old site wasn't as intuitive as we thought. So we took that experience and made things easier to find. For example:

  • Basic resources, like books and articles, are big as life on the home page.
  • The Subject Guides point you to things that are important to your major.
  • A useful search box has been added to the top of the page.

Those of you who were used to the previous site will probably appreciate the Library Tools tab at the top of the page where all the old favorites can easily be found.

We can't really say the site is complete but no website ever should be. We're going to continue usability testing and working to make the design better.

In the coming months, look out for more video tutorials and other handy features. You'll be able to tag resources for classes or group projects and recommend resources to include in the Subject Guides.

So what do you think? What would make this site and the Cowles Library more useful for you?

The new site is very nice, but would it be possible to put a link to e-reserves in a prominent position on the home page?

Thank you for the feedback.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you like the site.

First, an explanation. Usability testing suggested that our previous approach of having links to nearly every library resource on the homepage hindered students' ability to find basic things (like books in the catalog, for example). This layout is our best shot, to date, at trying to meet the needs of novice and experienced users. It is certainly not perfect.

We are going to continue usability testing and listening to comments like yours. The ability to find e-reserves is definitely on the short-list of things to look at. For the moment at least, e-reserves can be found on every page under the Library Tools tab, and on the About Us page.
