"John Adams Unbound" traveling exhibit has arrived!

portrait of JA

"John Adams Unbound" is a national traveling panel exhibition that explores the personal library of one of our founding fathers. Adams' personal library -- a collection of 3500 books willed by Adams to the people of Massachusetts -- provides first-hand insight into how John Adams shaped American history and how he was shaped through his lifelong dedication to reading and books. The Boston Public Library and the American Library Association organized the exhibit with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This exhibit is free and open  to the public during regular library hours. Exhibit runs from October 28 - December 11, 2009.

18th Havana International Book Fair - February 14-21, 2009

In February, I was privileged to be part of a group of North American librarians who visited Cuba on the occasion of the 18th Havana International Book Fair, known in Spanish as the Feria Internacional del Libro de La Habana. This trip was generously supported by Cowles Library and the Drake University Center for the Humanities.

The Book Fair attracts a huge number of visitors every year from all segments of Cuban society and all parts of the island.

LIVE! At Cowles Library - Feb 19th featuring Iowa Farm Crisis Photos

We are privileged to have the photo essay, "Shattered Dreams," on exhibit February through March 2009, in the James M. Collier-Drake Heritage Room. The 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs are the work of former Des Moines Register staff and special projects photographer, David Peterson. Peterson gave a multi-media presentation about his essay and photos on Thursday, February 19th at 7 pm, for the "LIVE! At the Drake Library" lecture series.

Obama Inauguration

Be in the middle of the excitement of the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States! If you can't be among the approximately 2 million people watching first hand in Washington D.C., you can be among the billions world-wide taking part virtually. If you are in Cowles Library on January 20th, you can watch the ceremony on our big screen. The Inaugural home page provides links to watching the ceremony online. See some pictures and history of previous inaugurations as well. For background information on inaugurations, see some of the books we have about previous inaugurations. Start with an introduction to President-Elect Obama and his program on the web, but check out the books we have about him and by him in the Library. Photo credit: jmtimages
