Book Review: "Monster of Florence" by Douglas Preston
Fascinating book about a series of unsolved murders in the Florence region of Italy from 1974-1985. There were a total of 14 people murdered during this time span, all "couples" in their cars in lovers lanes. The author moved to Florence to write a novel, and unwittingly became involved when he moved into a villa located within a matter of feet from the first murders. He hooked up with a local journalist, Mario Spezi, who knew everything there was to know about the cases. The two of them eventually became entangled in the investigation and Preston was told to leave the country or he would be arrested. Spezi was arrested and charged with obstruction among other things. Pressure from the outside journalism world eventually had an impact, and Spezi was acquitted.
Preston and Spezi have named who they are certain is the killer and, in a nerve-wracking scene, confronted the man. The local police, however, are certain it is some sort of satanic sect who is responsible. The crimes remain unsolved. Great read!
